Who is the best middleweight?
Who is the best middleweight? A question you have been hearing a lot of lately. Of course there are guys out there that nobody has ever heard of, and guys who don't fight, but lets say from the big shows. off hand I would say it's between Randy Couture, Vanderlei Silva, and Quinton Jackson. In the Silva and Couture match up I would have to go with Couture. I think Randy could get the fight to the ground and control the action. Of course I say this knowing that anything could happen and Silva could connect with a knee at anytime or unload a flurry of punches. If he can help it I don't think Randy will get into a wild exchange of punches with Vanderlei. I say Couture by decision. As for the Vanderlei and Jackson rematch, I don't know, that's definitely a tough one to call. If I had to call it, I would say Vanderlei by KO. hyperx. ...hyperx@fightfrenzy.com
2/25/04 - Sakuraba ICS 39 Here is what's behind the ICS 39. The ICS on Kazushi Sakuraba's shorts are his initials, the I and C together making up a design for the K. The 3 and 9 if spoken separately in Japanese would sound like san ku or Saku short for Sakuraba. Like a lot of fight fans, I am a big Sakuraba fan. A lot of people are wondering if and even hoping that he will retire soon. Some people say he hasn't been the same since his first fight with Vanderlei. As much as I would love to see Sak keep fighting, I think I am starting to agree. What's next? Will he move up to the heavyweight division like he mentioned? Will he keep smoking and drinking to make himself stronger? Will he let his injuries heal before taking a tough fight? Will he ever fight Rickson? Answers to these questions and more may never be known. ... hyperX hyperx@fightfrenzy.com
2/22/04 - love them hate them or both There are some fighters out there that people have strong feelings about. The guys that people either love or hate. Two guys that come to mind are Tank Abbot, and Phil Baroni. When i first saw Tank on UFC 6, I hated him. I could get pleasure in watching him loose, but somewhere along the line I became a fan. It didn't even matter if he would win or loose. I just knew that his fights would be entertaining. I can say the same for Phil. After his first couple of fights in the UFC the internet forums were full of people talking about how much they hated him and people were talking about not ordering any UFC's if he was on the card. I agreed with them and wondered if his whole image thing was, i hate to use this phrase, but good for the sport. Whatever that is suppose to mean. Well after another fight or two i realized how exciting his fights are. You can pretty much count on a Baroni fight being good no matter what. Wait a minute. Does that make me a fan? ... hyperX hyperx@fightfrenzy.com
2/20/04 - action packed 2004 So far 2004 has been action packed with great fights, events, and changes, starting with the Pride new years show. With hours and hours of big name fighters, Shockwave 2003 was one of the best shows in years. We got to see Gary Goodridge go out in style with a quick and unexpected high kick knockout over Don Frye in his retirement bout. We also got to see Royce Gracie put a beating on Hidehiko Yoshida who won their previous fight by a controversial referee stoppage in Shockwave 2002. Another fight from this great show was the Kazushi Sakuraba fight against Rodgerio Nogueira. Right from the beginning I knew that it was going to be a tough fight for Sakuraba as Nogueira came out like a madman throwing punches and flying knees. Sakuraba looked a little flat and slow to me and lost the decision. ... hyperX hyperx@fightfrenzy.com
2/20/04 - up for grabs UFC # 47 was the best UFC I have seen in a long time. Like many mma fans, I think Pride is a much better event all around but this UFC was great. Frank Mir got his revenge and knocked out Hammer House giant Wes Sims in their rematch. The champ Randy Couture lost his belt in a very strange match with Vitor Belfort. Right at the beginning of the fight they clinched and Vitor threw a punch that skimmed Randy's eye and cut his bottom eye lid forcing the doctor to stop the fight. There was speculation of whether or not Vitor accidentally poked him in the eye with his finger, but in any case Vitor Belfort is now the UFC welter weight champ. In the co-main event underrated BJ Penn beat the odds and took the belt away from Matt Hughes when he sunk in the rear naked choke in the first round. The UFC belts seem to be up for grabs after this chaotic event. There is currently no 155 pound, 185 pound, or heavyweight champion. In the 170 pound division we have BJ Penn, who nobody gave a chance to, and and at 199 pounds we have Belfort who stole the belt from Couture.. hyperX hyperx@fightfrenzy.com
